Our national debt is $21 trillion dollars and counting. This is an urgent problem putting our entire country’s economy at risk and crushing future generations.
Congress is just making the problem worse. The massive $1.3 trillion spending bill passed earlier this year was a disappointing sign that lawmakers in Washington — from both parties – aren’t treating America’s overspending problem with the urgency it deserves. Hardworking American taxpayers deserve better than this.
Our national debt is so large that if you stacked it in $1 dollar bills, it would reach to the moon and back – six times. Contrary to common belief, Washington has a spending problem, not a revenue problem. If lawmakers continue spending on autopilot and ignore the growing debt, the federal budget deficit is projected to be 8.8 percent of our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2046, and future generations of Americans will be in even more trouble.
It’s time to take a hard look at what lawmakers say and what they actually do when it comes to reining in overspending. Congress continues to rubber-stamp massive spending bills pieced together behind closed doors and often passed under the threat of a government shutdown. This has helped push federal spending to over $4 trillion this year – the equivalent of over $33,000 for each American household. Republicans and Democrats are BOTH responsible for putting our country on this unsustainable path, and they need to be held accountable to start restoring fiscal sanity.
