Americans for Prosperity Press Release

DHS’s dissolution of newly announced Disinformation Governance Board is a victory for free speech

May 19, 2022 by AFP

ARLINGTON, VA — This week the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) decided to “pause” its controversial Disinformation Governance Board, an entity announced only three weeks earlier and criticized by free speech advocates across the ideological spectrum. Americans for Prosperity Vice President of Legal & Judicial Policy — and First Amendment attorney — Casey Mattox issued the following statement:

“More speech, not censorship, is the answer to bad ideas. Creating a Disinformation Governance Board was a bad idea, and Americans responded by speaking out against it. Now the Administration is responding by ending it. That is how representative government should work. Unelected bureaucrats declaring themselves speech czars only divides people and furthers distrust in government. We’re grateful for the thousands of our activists and others who spoke up against this power grab and defended the civil liberties of all Americans.”

Mattox’s comments today follow weeks of engagement by AFP, Americans for Prosperity Foundation (AFPF), and Americans across the country. AFP raised concerns immediately following the first news of the board. AFPF quickly kicked off an investigation searching for answers to key questions about the board. And thousands of concerned citizens engaged.

AFPF’s Eric Bolinder added:

“We’re pleased that the Biden Administration is ending the DHS Disinformation Governance Board. But anything short of a full accounting of the board and an explanation of how this came to be is not enough. Given the enormous power DHS wields, the details of what it was trying to do here cannot continue to be shrouded in secrecy.”

AFP and AFPF are committed to defending civil liberties for all Americans, and we invite you to join us.
