CNBC features Americans for Prosperity’s personal option for health care

Mar 15, 2021 by AFP

Every year Americans list health care as one of the issues they care about the most. While many are satisfied with their own care, they believe the system in general needs repair.

And it does: decades of overregulation have put access to quality and affordable care out of reach for too many. The COVID-19 pandemic has only heightened the need for a less bureaucratic health system that enables people to access care when and where they need it, at prices they can afford.

Fortunately, AFP has a plan for that.

In a March 9 article, CNBC discussed AFP’s Personal Option for Health Care campaign, which offers several ideas that will expand access to quality, affordable care while empowering patients and the doctors they trust. The campaign offers a common-sense alternative to a public option that would eventually put the federal government in complete control of an individual’s health care.

As AFP Senior Health Policy Fellow Dean Clancy told CNBC, the personal option represents a “positive alternative” to a government takeover of the health care sector.

The personal option is about giving you the choice and control you want and deserve, access to the medical professionals you trust, at a price you can afford. It includes popular ideas like:

  • Expanding health savings accounts,
  • Making it easier for doctors and nurses to practice across state lines
  • Speeding up the U.S. Food and Drug Administration drug approval processes.

It also asks Congress to make COVID-era reforms to telehealth permanent, an area with strong bipartisan support.

As the CNBC article noted, AFP is “engaging with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to gain support for” the personal option. Specifically, we have reached out “to every member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter.” So far, feedback from lawmakers has been positive.

American medicine is the best in the world, but not everyone gets the level of care they need. Our goal is to lift the barriers that keep costs high and prevent health care providers and medical professionals from meeting the needs of patients.
