ATLANTA, GA – Following Governor Kemp signing SB 233, the Georgia Promise Scholarship Act, Americans for Prosperity – Georgia (AFP-GA) is applauding the Governor, and thanking lawmakers and the many grassroots partners who advocated for SB 233.

AFP-GA State Director Tony West released the following statement:

“We thank Governor Kemp for being a steadfast advocate of this vital legislation and signing the Georgia Promise Scholarship Act into law. With his signature, families all across the Peach State will have better opportunities and potential to attend a school that fits their needs, not the needs of systems and bureaucrats.

“As the Governor recently said, ‘there are no more next years,’ we are grateful that 2024 is finally the year we have accomplished a transformative education reform bill. The 2024 legislative session was a historic session for all Georgians. We look forward to continuing to partner with Governor Kemp and lawmakers next year to continue building from the successes of this year.”

Background

AFP-GA has been an influential leader in advocating for school choice and education reform this legislative session and throughout the past year. AFP-GA hosted multiple Days at the Capitol with grassroots activists urging support for pivotal policy reforms, including passing SB 233. Last month, both the Senate and the House passed SB 233. In addition, Governor Kemp voiced his support for the bill.

AFP-GA also launched a six-figure campaign to promote the Promise Scholarship, the only grassroots group to sponsor billboards in specific districts raising awareness and showing lawmakers how important education choice is to constituents. As part of the public pressure campaign, 6 Representatives that voted against SB 233 in 2023 changed their vote.

Last November, AFP-GA hosted an Education Freedom Rally with school choice leader Dr. Corey DeAngelis and State Representative Todd Jones (R-District 25), the sponsor of SB 233, as well as having an op-ed published in the Forsyth County News highlighting how SB 233 would benefit students across the state.
