AFP-VA Discouraged by Lawmakers Failure to Protect Independent Contractors

Feb 2, 2021 by AFP

RICHMOND, Va. – Americans for Prosperity- Virginia (AFP-VA) today expressed concern that lawmakers failed to advance SB1323, a worker classification bill for independent contractors, to the floor. This bill would ensure that Virginia does not experience California’s detrimental consequences from reclassifying workers through its AB 5 law that led to roughly one million independent contractors being reclassified. The grassroots group asserts that lawmakers should be doing everything possible to make it easier for people to earn a living.

AFP-VA State Director JC Hernandez issued the following statement:

“Not only do workers have to contend with the economic fallout of COVID-19, but independent contractors have to deal with continued uncertainty due to legislators failing to advance this bill. Legislators could have made it easier for employers and independent contractors to work together, but they have chosen to prolong the status quo that creates a regulatory nightmare for independent workers. We will continue to protect work opportunities for any individual who relies on flexible employment to provide for themselves and their families.”
