CARSON CITY, NV — Ahead of the Nevada General Assembly’s special session expected to begin this week, Americans for Prosperity-Nevada (AFP-Nevada) is announcing its opposition to the legislature promoting taxpayer-funded tax credits propping up the film industry in the Battle Born State.
AFP-Nevada is dedicated to protecting Nevada taxpayers and ensuring that the state legislature uses the hard-earned dollars of Nevadans responsibly. Creating a tax incentive program for a billion-dollar industry is essentially corporate welfare, and Nevadans do not reap the financial benefits of these government handouts. Furthermore, the proposal would allocate $120 million in tax credits each year for the next 15 years, locking in Nevadans to increased taxes for tax credits that are rarely used by the film industry itself and are often transferred to other industries.
AFP-Nevada Deputy State Director Wiselet Rouzard issued the following statement:
“AFP-Nevada has long fought for Nevada taxpayers’ bottom line, fighting against inflated government spending and corporate welfare like the film tax incentives proposed by the General Assembly. The bottom line is that taxpayers don’t need to be funding billion-dollar industries, and Nevadans will likely never see the benefit of this wasted taxpayer money.
“Alarmingly, Nevada has issued more than $35 million in tax credits to the film industry that are often transferred to different industries — the purpose of this legislation is simply not being met.
“AFP-Nevada plans to put the full weight of its grassroots army behind opposing these misguided tax credits and intends to hold lawmakers accountable for putting billion-dollar industries ahead of Nevada taxpayers.”
