Johnson Tells Recent LSU Grad Concerned About Economy, “Help is on the way, hang in there, and don’t leave Louisiana!”
Baton Rouge, LA—Yesterday, Americans for Prosperity hosted a conversation on advancing core conservative principles and budget priorities in the 119th Congress with House Speaker Mike Johnson.
During the event, Americans for Prosperity-Louisiana (AFP-LA) top activist, Eric McElveen from Mandeville, engaged with the Speaker on what the economic future as a recent college graduate looks like.
McElveen asked: “I recently graduated from our alma mater Louisiana State University (LSU), and I am focused on my future, hopefully building a career and starting a family in Louisiana, but the last few years have been difficult with the rising cost of energy, housing, and groceries. How would your principles and your vision for the next couple of years on issues help me and other Louisianians achieve our goal?”
In part, Speaker Johnson replied: “The best thing that we can do to ensure liberty, opportunity, security for you and your young family that you’ll start is to get government out of the way … The Republican party, we talked about the core principles, but at the end of the day you can summarize it: we’re pro-family and pro-growth. Those are the two ingredients that make it easier for people to start out.”
Speaker Johnson shared personally how his daughter is graduating from law school at LSU in the coming months and recently got married, sharing similar concerns as McElveen, but looking to her father for results. “[Reconciliation] is the quickest vehicle we have to achieve these desired results and what we need is to get government out of the way; we need a smaller, leaner, federal government that’s out of your life so that the free market can thrive,” the Speaker added.
“If you reduce taxes and regulations, you allow job creators, entrepreneurs, risk takers, the people that create the jobs to do more of what they do and you unleash the power of the U.S. economy that has been smothered by government regulation for too long,” the Speaker stated.
Speaker Johnson told McElveen that prior to the pandemic we had the greatest economy in the history of the world, and he is confident that we can get back to that with the goal to, “Help everyone who is starting out,” such as McElveen.
In a final exchange, Speaker Johnson implored McElveen, “Help is on the way, hang in there, and don’t leave Louisiana!”
