Americans for Prosperity Applauds House for Passing “Clean Slate” Bill

Legislation breaks down barriers to opportunity

Harrisburg, Pa. – Americans for Prosperity-Pennsylvania (AFP-PA) today applauded the state House for passing legislation that would help Pennsylvanians charged with low-level, nonviolent crimes obtain jobs and productively re-entering a community once they have served their sentence. House Bill 1419, often referred to as the “Clean Slate” bill, would provide for the automatic sealing of criminal records for misdemeanors and charges not leading to convictions. AFP-PA now urges the Senate, which unanimously passed Sen. Scott Wagner’s companion bill (SB 529) in 2017, to swiftly approve the House measure and send it to the desk of Gov. Wolf, who has signaled support for “Clean Slate” legislation.

“Too many people in our state charged with low-level, nonviolent crimes don’t get a fair chance to put their lives back together and experience our state’s promise after paying their debts. Pennsylvania should be a place where those who deserve opportunities get them,” said AFP-PA State Director Beth Anne Mumford. “This legislation would break down barriers to opportunity for folks who deserve second chances, and we thank Reps Sheryl Delozier and Jordan Harris for their leadership on this issue.”
