AFP-TN Applauds Lawmakers, Governor for Tax Cut
NASHVILLE, TN—Americans for Prosperity-Tennessee (AFP-TN) today commended lawmakers for repealing the Amusement Tax. This effort will remove an unfair tax practice that targets smaller fitness facilities, while leaving larger facilities exempt from paying.
AFP-TN joined forces with the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB-TN), the Beacon Center of Tennessee, and Americans for Tax Reform to request the tax repeal from Governor Bill Lee and the Tennessee Legislature.
AFP-TN State Director Tori Venable issued the following statement:
“This six-million-dollar tax cut will lead to a healthier Tennessee. Putting an additional ‘amusement’ tax on people for exercising was a terrible idea in the first place. Anyone who has spent hours in the gym isn’t there for their own amusement.
“We applaud the legislature for repealing the Amusement Tax, which has been a prime example of government picking winners and losers. Gyms larger than 15,000 square feet have been exempt since the 1980s, while leaving smaller fitness facilities holding the bag. With the help of Governor Bill Lee, this unfair tax burden will finally be lifted off the shoulders of all Tennessee businesses.”
