Senators Klobuchar, Smith Vote to Deny Minnesotans More Affordable Health Care Options

Grassroots group dismayed by senators’ attempt to scrap short-term, limited duration health insurance options

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – Americans for Prosperity-Minnesota (AFP-MN) today criticized Senators Smith and Klobuchar for voting to strip health coverage for thousands of Minnesotans who benefit from short-term, limited-duration health care plans. The bill failed with a final vote of 50-50.

Both Minnesota senators voted to deprive millions of Americans across the country from accessing affordable, quality health care plans. The vote on S.J. Res 63 comes just one week after the Trump administration’s expansion of these flexible, short-term health care plans went into effect – an effort to help millions of Americans who have been priced out of Obamacare’s unaffordable costs while leaving other Obamacare plans untouched.

“Minnesotans want and deserve more affordable health care options that work for them. Instead of helping Minnesotans access flexible, quality health care plans, Senators Klobuchar and Smith voted to deny Minnesotans affordable alternatives to Obamacare’s rigid mandates,” said AFP-MN State Director Jason Flohrs. “Today’s vote shows our senators think Washington should be in charge of our health care rather than allowing consumers the choice they need to get plans at prices that work for everyday families. Thankfully the bill failed, and thousands of Minnesotans get to keep the health care that they want. Forcing Minnesotans to continue to be trapped in Obamacare’s expensive plans is wrong and we are extremely disappointed our senators voted for less freedom and less choice.”

Short term, limited duration insurance plans are vital escape valves for the millions of Americans hurt most by Obamacare. Free from Washington’s one-size-fits-all mandates, these plans provide consumers the flexibility to purchase insurance that best fits their needs at costs they can afford.
