AFP, Freedom Partners and Grassroots Partners: Short-Term, Limited-Duration Insurance the Right Approach to Lower Costs

STLD Insurance a Vital Escape Valve to Hundreds of Thousands of Consumers Seeking Relief from Skyrocketing Costs Under Obamacare

Arlington, VA – Americans for Prosperity, Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce and grassroots partners Generation Opportunity and The LIBRE Initiative today reiterated their broad support for short-term, limited-duration (STLD) insurance health care plans. In a formal comment submitted to the Departments of Health and Human Services, Treasury and Labor, the groups write, “an expanded STLD coverage duration with guaranteed plan renewability will give consumers the flexibility and assurance of quality, affordable health insurance.”

Americans for Prosperity Chief Government Affairs Officer Brent Gardner issued the following statement:

“Short-Term, limited-duration insurance plans fill an essential hole in the healthcare market created by the restrictions and barriers of Obamacare. These plans not only provide more options for consumers in the healthcare market, but they are already significantly reducing costs. We urge Congress to free Americans from the high costs and one-size-fits-all regulations of ACA exchanges by supporting Sen. Barrasso’s bill to make these kinds of plans renewable.”

Freedom Partners Executive Vice President Nathan Nascimento issued the following statement:

“The American people need more options when it comes to health care, not top-down, Washington-knows-best restraints. These plans offer much-needed choice to the hundreds of thousands of Americans who continue to feel trapped between paying skyrocketing costs and dropping health insurance coverage altogether. With greater access to these alternative plans, individuals and families can begin to once again make decisions that best fit their needs at prices they can afford.”

Generation Opportunity Policy Director David Barnes issued the following statement:

“Young people deserve to be able to pick and choose health plans that fit our lifestyle at prices we can truly afford. Providing our generation with more flexible and affordable options gives us the ability to pay for the types of services we need instead of coverage we can’t afford and will never use.”

The LIBRE Initiative President Daniel Garza issued the following statement:

“Even years after the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, Hispanic workers and families still have a hard time finding health insurance that suits their needs, at competitive prices. For many, the options have only gotten worse – and 22 percent of Hispanics say they have gone without care in the last year because of cost. Families are dealing both with higher premiums and higher out-of-pocket costs. We can only be helped by reforms that give them more health care options, and which put consumers in charge of selecting the care that suits them.”

Freedom Partners last month conveyed support for the Improving Choices in Heath Care Coverage Act – legislation introduced by Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) that expands access to affordable, short-term, limited duration health plans by codifying the Trump administration’s proposed rule into law.

Americans for Prosperity launched a digital campaign to educate grassroots activists about the benefits of STLD plans and is providing them with the tools and knowledge to submit comments expressing support for the proposed rule change to expand these plans, which will give consumers more choice over their health care.
