Grassroots group continues its statewide criminal justice reform tour in Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, MO – Americans for Prosperity-Missouri (AFP-MO) is hosting its second event of its statewide criminal justice reform tour, First Steps to Reform: The Matthew Charles Story, today in Kansas City. The event will feature Mayor Quinton Lucas, Sara Baker from the ACLU, and Matthew Charles, President Trump’s State of the Union guest and first beneficiary of the First Step Act, the monumental criminal justice reform bill that passed last year.

Background:
AFP’s statewide tour will be in four cities this week throughout Missouri and feature Matthew Charles’ personal story of overcoming barriers and becoming one of the nation’s leaders on criminal justice reform, while featuring local and state lawmakers that will discuss reforms being considered in the Show-Me State. AFP is also partnering with organizations like Freeway Ministries, the Americans Civil Liberties Union, Empower Missouri, and more.
AFP has been at the forefront of pushing for criminal justice reform at the state and national level.
The First Step Act was signed into law last year by President Trump. The bipartisan legislation shortens mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent offenders and expands access to rehabilitation programs in federal prisons.
