ICYMI: House Leaders Utilize AFP Foundation Findings To Highlight DHS Abuse of Power
ARLINGTON, VA — This week, House leaders highlighted federal records obtained by Americans for Prosperity Foundation to shed light on how the Biden Administration is keeping citizens in the dark on government censorship. In a Committee on Homeland Security Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability hearing, Rep. Mike Ezell (R-MS) questioned Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary Iranga Kahangama on federal memos that argued the agency has existing regulatory of statutory authority in “the MDM space” — short for “misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation.”
Underscoring the constitutional implications of these documents, AFP Foundation Director of Investigations Kevin Schmidt said:
“DHS continues to keep Congress and the American people in the dark about the regulatory or statutory authority the agency believes it has over online speech. More than a year and half since DHS dissolved its Disinformation Governance Board, there remain numerous questions and a total lack of transparency about the agency’s programs to monitor speech.”
Despite public demands for accountability, DHS has withheld the content of the memos for more than a year. And on the Hill this week, agency officials continued to refuse to answer questions on the Disinformation Board’s actions. The memos were obtained by AFP Foundation in a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit on the now-defunct Disinformation Governance Board
