ATLANTA, GA – Following the release of the Georgia House of Representatives Study Committee on Certificate of Need Modernization final report, Americans for Prosperity – Georgia (AFP-GA) issued the following statement and is urging lawmakers to consider the Committee’s recommendations in the upcoming legislative session.

AFP-GA State Director Tony West released the following statement:

“We are excited that the Study Committee included recommendations that recognize the importance of Certificate of Need (CON) repeal, similar to what South Carolina achieved earlier this year. We are also encouraged to see the Committee take to heart Katie Chubb’s testimony about the hardship CON laws have caused her, which played a role in the Committee’s recommendation to remove CON requirements for birthing centers, neonatal intensive care units, and other medical facilities. These recommendations shine light on specific services utilized by vulnerable populations.

“We look forward to continuing to work closely with lawmakers to turn these recommendations into legislation that improves the lives of Georgians.”

Background

Throughout this year, AFP-GA has been an influential leader in advocating for a full repeal of Certificate of Need laws. The final report from the House of Representatives Study Committee on Certificate of Need Modernization listed 28 recommendations to reform CON laws in Georgia. Recommendation 14 calls for drastically reducing CON requirements for future hospitals. Recommendation 24 calls for removing CON requirements on mental health facilities, birthing centers, neonatal intensive care units, and a variety of other specialized providers to ease bureaucratic processes and allow providers to treat patients in a timely manner.

The House of Representatives Study Committee on Certificate of Need Modernization report comes after the Senate Study Committee on Certificate of Need Reform recommended a full repeal of CON laws.
