AFP Urges Collaboration to Improve Policing, Community Trust

On the heels of Michigan Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib’s recent comments on policing, the grassroots group Americans for Prosperity Michigan said hope can be found in Michigan on the state level where lawmakers from both parties have rallied around various criminal justice reforms.

Diana Prichard, community engagement director for the group, issued the following statement:

“We were disappointed by Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib’s comments yesterday on policing because they leave little room for hope–and hope is what we need during divisive times.

“In Michigan, we are working together with a bipartisan group of lawmakers who are committed to making improvements to policing that will benefit communities as well as the men and women in law enforcement who honorably serve those communities.

“Many excellent bills were introduced last session on the issue of policing. By putting grassroots momentum behind these ideas we can achieve change. This session we are more committed than ever to working with leaders in the House and Senate, the Administration, community groups, and law enforcement partners to see thoughtful, meaningful improvements enacted before the end of the year.

“Our choice now is between coming together to work toward improvements or retreating to our corners and getting nothing done. The latter is not an acceptable answer for our state.”
