Arlington, VA – Americans for Prosperity today announced it will score the Spending Cuts to Expired and Unnecessary Programs Act (H.R. 3), otherwise known as the rescissions package, on its congressional scorecard. In a letter sent to Senators Wednesday, AFP urged members to vote “Yes”, calling the rescissions plan a step in the right direction toward restoring fiscal sanity.
In the key vote letter sent to Senate lawmakers ahead of an expected vote Wednesday, AFP Chief Government Affairs Officer Brent Gardner wrote:
Federal overspending has been a growing problem under Congresses and Presidents from both parties. The rescission package is an excellent opportunity to finally take a small but important step in the right direction toward restoring fiscal sanity. Following recommendations from the Trump administration, H.R. 3 would eliminate nearly $15 billion in wasteful, unnecessary, and unobligated spending.
AFP has been an outspoken proponent of President Trump’s rescission plan. In a continuation of its long-term Stop Overspending campaign, on Monday AFP announced digital ads urging Republicans and Democrat Senators to support the White House’s rescission plan.
AFP issued its own recommendations for rescissions in early May, urging lawmakers to continue the work set in motion by President Trump to further rein in irresponsible spending.
BACKGROUND: AFP Launches Major Campaign Against Wasteful Government Spending
The launch of AFP’s “Stop Over Spending” campaign over Memorial Day recess included robust digital, direct-mail, print, and radio advertising in congressional districts across the country. President Trump’s $15.3 billion rescission plan presents an opportunity for lawmakers to demonstrate fiscal responsibility by supporting this modest attempt to undo some of the overspending damage.
