COLUMBUS, OH – Americans for Prosperity-Ohio (AFP-OH) today applauded the Gas Tax Relief Plan unveiled by Vivek Ramaswamy alongside Ohio House Speaker Matt Huffman and Senate President Rob McColley, which would suspend Ohio’s motor fuel tax for 90 days to provide immediate relief to families and businesses paying record prices at the pump.
AFP-OH specifically praised the plan’s approach to replenishing the state’s Rainy Day Fund and ODOT’s cash balance: rather than raising other taxes or cutting services, the plan directs savings recovered from rooting out Medicaid fraud back into the funds drawn down to pay for the tax suspension.
Donovan O’Neil, AFP-OH State Director, released the following statement:
“Ohio families are getting squeezed at the pump and the grocery store, and this plan would provide real, immediate relief. Just as importantly, tying the replenishment of state reserves to verified Medicaid fraud savings creates a meaningful incentive for state agencies to identify and eliminate waste rather than simply acknowledge it.
“Too often, fraud in government programs is uncovered without meaningful accountability. This plan takes a different approach: deliver savings for working families while giving state government a clear incentive to root out fraud and protect taxpayer dollars. That’s the kind of practical, taxpayer-focused policy AFP-OH supports, and we urge the General Assembly to act.”
