AFP-Nebraska Response to Pillen Tax Plan Press Conference

Jul 18, 2024 by AFP

LINCOLN, NE – Following Governor Jim Pillen’s press conference Thursday morning where he released new details for his plan to increase sales taxes statewide, Americans for Prosperity-Nebraska (AFP-NE) doubled down in opposition to the scheme and vowed to continue fighting on behalf of the hardworking Nebraskans who would be affected most.

Pillen’s so-called “Nebraska Plan to Cut Property Taxes” will be up for debate in a special session of the Nebraska Legislature starting next week, after the governor failed to push his tax hike through the regular session that concluded in April.

AFP-NE State Director, John Gage, made the following statement:

“Governor Pillen’s scheme to shift more taxes onto working- and middle-class Nebraska families was defeated once, and this special session will be no different.

“While other Republican governors are working to make more affordable for their constituents facing sky-high living costs under the Biden economy, Govenor Pillen is pushing a plan that would be the largest tax increase on Nebraskans in state history.

“AFP-NE will continue educating voters about the massive costs of this tax scheme and making sure the lawmakers who support it are held accountable.”

Background:

AFP-NE commissioned two public opinion polls during the 2024 legislative session that found widespread opposition to Pillen’s tax plan and spent over six figures in a statewide digital and mail campaign raising awareness of the plan’s massive shortfalls.
