AFP-MN Statement on ‘Despicable’ End of Legislative Session

May 20, 2024 by AFP

ST. PAUL, MN – Americans for Prosperity – Minnesota (AFP-MN) condemned members of the state House and Senate today, following a tumultuous end to the 2024 legislative session on Sunday night, in which Democratic Farmer Labor (DFL) Party lawmakers crammed dead bills from earlier in the session into a 1,400-plus page tax bill and passed it without debate.

AFP-MN State Director, Jake Coleman, gave the following statement:

“The despicable, underhanded tactics employed by the DFL last night to pass their unpopular priorities is exactly what the public can expect now two years into their complete control of the state government.

“What we saw last night was a complete breakdown of the legislative process, where Senate Democrats used their one-seat majority to ram through bills that should never have seen the light of day. The full tax bill wasn’t even printed yet when it passed the House.

“The DFL took a page from Nancy Pelosi’s playbook for Congress, saying “you can read the bill after it passes.”

In case you missed it, Coleman went on the air with Jon Justice on Twin Cities News Talk last week, where he discussed how the DFL’s leftward march in this year’s session, and where AFP-MN will focus its efforts for the rest of this year.

Background:

AFP-MN led the charge this year to scale back Minnesota’s high taxes and rampant spending, after Governor Tim Walz passed a record-breaking state budget last year that eliminated a $17.5 billion budget surplus.

In response, AFP-MN launched the “One Expensive Minnesota” campaign, a yearlong, six-figure advertising campaign to hold lawmakers accountable for their wasteful spending and offer policy reforms and safeguards that will protect taxpayers from this type of reckless behavior in the future.
