LANSING, Mich. – Americans for Prosperity-Michigan offered its strong support for a package of bills introduced in the House Judiciary Committee today that would automate and expand the state’s expungement process for people with certain misdemeanor and felony offenses. The grassroots group has joined a broad coalition of organizations backing the bill package and says it will work on advancing other commonsense reforms to the criminal justice system throughout 2020. Annie Patnaude, AFP-Michigan state director, issued the following statement:
“This legislation offers a fresh start for Michiganders with criminal records who have paid their debt to society. These bills will help break down barriers to jobs, education, and housing for many in our state.
“We appreciate Chairman Filler’s leadership in crafting such a strong and effective reform package. We will continue to educate our grassroots communities on important criminal justice reforms that improve public safety, give people second chances, and help ensure all Michiganders have the opportunity to fulfill their potential.”
