Arlington, VA – Americans for Prosperity (AFP) renewed its call for U.S. leadership to introduce proposed reforms of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Appellate Body before it ceases to function next month and as WTO Director-General Roberto Azevedo is in Washington today to meet with leading trade officials in the administration and on Capitol Hill.
AFP Trade Policy Fellow Dan Pearson issued the following statement:
“The administration has signaled to the world its concerns with regard to reforming the WTO Appellate Body. Now it should take up the mantle of U.S. leadership and offer specific changes to address its concerns.
“The administration’s bargaining leverage today is high, but it will quickly dissipate once the Appellate Body ceases to function. We urge the White House to strike while the iron is hot. A viable dispute settlement system that predictably enforces global trading rules will reduce uncertainty for the many businesses and workers that rely on the global economy.”
