Police Reforms are Needed Step for Transforming Police Culture

Jun 30, 2020 by AFP

CONCORD, NH – Americans for Prosperity-New Hampshire (AFP-NH) today praised the legislature for passing HB 1645, which includes a number of criminal justice reforms. The grassroots group has worked with the ACLU and other coalition organizations in gathering support for the bill.

The package includes the following reforms:

  • Requires law enforcement officers to report misconduct by other law enforcement officers.
  • Establishes a new fund for psychological stability screening for candidates for certification as law enforcement officers; transfers money from the drug forfeiture fund to the psychological stability screening fund, and allows the police standards and training council to reimburse the state or a political subdivision for psychological stability screening for candidates for certification as law enforcement.
  • Strengthens our existing bail reform law to make clearer who should be held pre-trial.

AFP-NH Deputy Director Ross Connolly released the following statement:

“We applaud the legislature for working to transform police culture and passing these reasonable reforms. This bill includes reforms that support law enforcement and will help build better trust between police officers and the communities they serve.

“By bringing more accountability and transparency to policing, we can start to remove some of the structural barriers to good policing. While this is a good start, legislators should continue making reforms to the justice system that respects every person’s civil rights and protects our communities.”
