AFP-WV Key Vote Alert: Support H.B.4434: Relating to restrictions on use or sale of motor vehicles based on power source

Jan 29, 2024 by AFP

Dear Lawmaker:

On behalf of our activists across West Virginia, I urge you to support House Bill 4434. This vote may be recorded in our 2024 session legislative scorecard.

While some Americans may be excited about the growing number of EVs that have come to market in recent years, these vehicles do not suit the needs of every driver. Like the transportation innovations of the past, EVs should have to earn their place on America’s roads by giving consumers more for less. They should not be forced on the American people through local, state, or federal mandates.

House Bill 4434 would ensure that no state or local government entity can prevent West Virginians from buying the type of car that they want to purchase. This bill is especially important as some cities and other states have taken steps to remove gas powered cars from the market through government mandate. As has been demonstrated in many real-world driving situations, electric vehicles aren’t right for every situation. Whether when driving in extreme temperatures, through hilly or mountainous terrain, or even just long distances, electric cars aren’t what every West Virginian needs—much less wants.

As President Joe Biden continues to try to push through harmful government mandates regulating energy usage as a part of his so-called Green New Deal, it is important that state policymakers send strong signals to Washington that our citizens will not be bullied by needless red tape that limits their freedoms. This legislation helps to send that signal to Washington by ensuring that the state and local government cannot prohibit the freedom of choice that West Virginians have when picking the right vehicle for them.

It is for these reasons that I ask you to vote “yes” to support House Bill 4434.

Sincerely,

Jason Huffman
