Americans for Prosperity Calls on Senate to End Debate and File Cloture on COVID-19 Phase III

Mar 23, 2020 by AFP

Arlington, Va. – Today, Americans for Prosperity issued a Key Vote Alert to all Senators asking them to end debate on HR 748, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, and proceed to cloture. Emily Seidel, CEO  of Americans for Prosperity, issued the following statement in response to the political opportunism and obstruction currently delaying much needed relief.

“Last week we encouraged Congress to work together in good faith to ensure the response to this crisis focused on helping the people and businesses who are impacted, and warned them not to use it to advance a political agenda. The recent actions that have delayed this relief are political opportunism at its worst. It is deeply disheartening that at a time when Americans are coming together in strength and unity, Washington is once again working harder to carve out wins for partisan special interests than do what’s right.”

Dear Senators,

On behalf of Americans for Prosperity activists around the country, I urge you to SUPPORT cloture on the motion to proceed on HR 748, legislation crafted to provide relief to those affected by the spread of, and containment measures associated with, the COVID-19 virus. This vote may be recorded in our 2020 session legislative scorecard.

While reasonable people may have differing viewpoints on some elements of the underlying legislation, we believe it is unacceptable to subject this package to “death by delay” given the urgency of the current public health emergency, which is inflicting damage on the well-being and livelihood of American workers, families and small businesses with each passing day.

We have encouraged Congress to take deliberate steps to provide relief that are timely, targeted and temporary. If open-ended debate on this legislation continues indefinitely, the threat of special-interest log-rolling grows. This will result in a less-targeted package, and an unacceptable delay in the enactment of those badly-needed and beneficial elements the underlying bill contains.

We believe it is time for lawmakers to bring debate to a close and respectfully ask you to vote YES on cloture on the motion to proceed on HR 748.
