AFP-VA: Worker Freedom Prevails

Feb 9, 2020 by AFP

Richmond, Va. – Americans for Prosperity-Virginia issued the following statement after the Senate chose not to advance Senate Bill 426, which would have repealed crucial right-to-work protections in Virginia, prior to the legislature’s crossover deadline. Some lawmakers had recently pushed to repeal Virginia’s decades-old right-to-work law despite strong public support for the law and the law’s contributions to making Virginia the top-rated state to do business.

AFP-VA State Director JC Hernandez issued the following statement:

“This bill would have repealed right-to-work in all but name and lawmakers were smart to listen to their constituents and reject it. Right-to-work has helped make Virginia the most attractive destination for business and has given Virginia’s workers more individual choice. Workers should not be fired if they choose not to pay fees to a union of which they are not a member. Workers shouldn’t have to choose between either supporting their families or keeping a job. We thank our activists and Virginians all across the Commonwealth for contacting their lawmakers to ensure that this bill reached a dead end. We also thank Senator Norment for his leadership in this effort and we look forward to continuing the fight against any repeal of our right-to-work status on behalf of all Virginians.”

AFP-VA mobilized its signature grassroots infrastructure to produce thousands of phone calls, text messages, and emails to urge lawmakers to protect right-to-work. The group last week also released a poll highlighting strong nonpartisan support for right-to-work in Virginia. The poll, commissioned by Americans for Prosperity and conducted by Public Opinion Strategies from January 29th to February 1st, indicated two-thirds of Virginia voters favor the state’s right-to-work law.
