AFP-VA Reacts to Subcommittee Voting Down Stadium Subsidies Bill

Feb 7, 2018 by AFP

RICHMOND, Va. – Americans for Prosperity-Virginia (AFP-VA) on Wednesday expressed disappointment in members of the House Appropriations General Government & Capital Outlay Subcommittee for rejecting Delegate Michael Webert’s House Bill 242, which would have prohibited all taxpayer financing of professional sports stadiums. AFP-VA has consistently opposed stadium subsides, which the organization views as a form of corporate welfare that gives special interests handouts at the expense of taxpayers. The grassroots organization played an instrumental role in defeating a stadium proposal for the Potomac Nationals in Prince William County that would have cost taxpayers over $30 million.

“The subcommittee’s decision today is a victory for special interests and a defeat for Virginia taxpayers. Stadium subsidies are crony capitalism at its worst, giving taxpayer handouts to the powerful and well-connected while leaving taxpayers on the hook,” said AFP-VA State Director JC Hernandez. “We appreciate Delegate Webert for trying to protect our wallets and it’s too bad there aren’t more delegates willing to stand up to the special interests. This bill may be dead, but we will hold legislators accountable on this issue and continue our efforts to end this corporate welfare scheme.”
