AFP Praises Governor and Legislature for Supporting Indigent Defense

Jul 17, 2019 by AFP

COLUMBUS, OH – Following the passage of the biennial budget, Americans for Prosperity-Ohio (AFP-OH) today issued the following statement:

“Governor DeWine set the tone to take indigent defense seriously in his introduced version,” said AFP-OH State Director, Micah Derry. “The House made significant improvements and we are encouraged that such important first steps were made in the final version of the budget. Improving how counsel is appointed is still a top priority for AFP-OH.”

Background:

AFP-Ohio championed adequate funding for public legal representation and was at the forefront of public defender reform. The grassroots group held several events that helped educate and mobilize citizens to push for criminal justice reform in the Buckeye state.
