AFP-Iowa Backs Governor Kim Reynolds’ Plan to Cut Red Tape

Study: Iowa Administrative Code Puts over 160,000 Restrictions on Businesses

DES MOINES – Americans for Prosperity-Iowa praised Governor Kim Reynolds for her comments on regulatory reform following her press conference today. The Governor’s plan calls for regular five-year reviews of all regulations issued by state government departments. The proposal comes as an alarming new study was published from the Mercatus Center at George mason University that found the Iowa Administrative Code (IAC) contains 160,306 restrictions and 10.1 million words that would take an individual more than 14 weeks to read its entirety. The study also identified food manufacturing, transportation equipment manufacturing, crop production and animal production as some of the top industries targeted by regulators last year.

Americans for Prosperity-Iowa State Director Drew Klein made the following statement:

“Governor Reynolds is right to tackle the regulatory burden on business in Iowa and work to bring greater accountability to state government. Iowa farmers and small businesses get hit the hardest whenever Des Moines bureaucrats issue new regulations. Overregulation costs Iowans millions of dollars every year and makes it much more difficult to start and grow a business in our state. Governor Reynolds deserves credit for recognizing that Iowa’s regulatory state has become much too powerful with too little accountability to Iowans. The proposal for regular five year reviews is a good government, common sense first step towards easing the regulatory burden on Iowa’s job creators. AFP-Iowa activists are eager to work with the Governor and the Legislature this year to help enact these kind of pro-growth reform policies. If we can enact regulatory reform and tax reform, 2018 will be a banner year for Iowa’s economy.”
