AFP Celebrates Anniversary of First Step Act

Arlington, VA – Tomorrow marks the first anniversary of President Trump signing the First Step Act into law. This law includes prison and sentencing reforms that will increase public safety, reduce crime, and save taxpayer money. As a result of the First Step Act, more than 4,000 individuals have already been empowered to return to their families and communities in a better position than when they entered the criminal justice system.

Americans for Prosperity board member, Mark Holden, issued the following statement:

“Americans for Prosperity and its activists were tremendously proud to stand together with policymakers and advocates from all backgrounds in support of the bipartisan First Step Act. As we celebrate the law’s first anniversary, we remain particularly grateful for the efforts of Sens. Grassley, Durbin, and Lee, Reps. Collins and Jeffries, Jared Kushner, and President Trump for uniting to enact this transformative legislation.

“While Congress and the Administration must still ensure that the First Step Act gets fully implemented, the results already speak for themselves. Not only has the law given people like Matthew Charles a second chance, but it has also provided a voice to thousands who were previously voiceless – including currently incarcerated individuals and their families. We will continue our fight for “the next step” – continued reforms that protect public safety, while also giving people the rehabilitation and redemption they deserve.”
