AFP-LA Applauds Passage of Portable Benefits Legislation

Baton Rouge, LA – Americans for Prosperity–Louisiana (AFP-LA) today applauded lawmakers for advancing HB 301, the Independent Contractor Voluntary Portable Benefits Act, which will expand access to benefits by allowing independent workers and contractors to use portable accounts that stay with them from job to job, instead of being tied to one employer. The bill will create a framework that allows businesses to offer portable benefits to independent contractors without jeopardizing their employment classification.

AFP-LA State Director Scott Simon released the following statement:

Louisiana’s economy is changing, and more workers are choosing flexible, independent work that best fits the needs of their lives and families. HB 301 is an innovative reform that helps modernize state law by making it easier for independent contractors to access benefits while preserving the flexibility and freedom they value.

HB 301 gives workers more flexibility, supports independent work, increases access to more personalized and portable health coverage options, and brings our benefits system more in line with today’s economy. AFP-LA applauds lawmakers for passing this commonsense legislation and supporting policies that encourage innovation, economic opportunity, and workforce freedom in Louisiana.

The bill now heads to Governor Jeff Landry’s desk.
