Charleston, WVa.- Americans for Prosperity-West Virginia (AFP-WV) is in mourning today following the loss of former Delegate and founder of the West Virginia Center Right Coalition, John Overington. Del. Overington passed away late yesterday evening and gave constituents decades of public service to West Virginia not only in his capacity as a lawmaker but as a conservative grassroots leader. He will be most remembered for his leadership, generosity, and making tremendous strides in creating a more transparent state government.
Jason Huffman, AFP-WV State Director, released the following statement:
“We are saddened by the loss of our dear friend, Delegate John Overington. John was a man of unshakeable principles, committed to making West Virginia a model for good governance. Before John came to the House, the state legislature did not record their roll call votes. This lack of fundamental transparency stymied citizens’ efforts to hold their elected officials to account for their votes in the legislature. Thankfully, Delegate John Overington, while still in the political minority, successfully led the charge to ensure that all roll call votes of the legislature were made available to the public ushering in an era in which every West Virginian now had the basic right to know how their members stand on the issues important to them. This was emblematic of who John was at his core—a man determined to shed light on government, empower citizens, and unite folks around our shared West Virginia values. John’s transformational impact created lasting change that made West Virginia stronger. We will miss his stalwart leadership greatly. And we will fervently endeavor to continue his good work.”
