Constitutional Amendment to ban statewide property tax advances for voter approval

Nashville, TN – Today, the Tennessee House of Representatives passed SJR1, which will amend the state constitution to ban a statewide property tax. The Senate previously passed the resolution in March. The constitutional amendment will now be pending voters’ approval on the 2026 ballot.

With both chambers having passed the property tax resolution by at 2/3 majority, AFP-TN has now helped secure passage of most of the “Volunteer Way” legislative agenda. This agenda called for the Tennessee Legislature to focus on four key priorities aimed at reigniting the American Dream and protecting the Volunteer Way for future generations: establishing universal school choice, passing the REINS Act/regulation reform, banning a statewide property tax, and increasing transparency in government.

AFP-TN State Director Tori Venable released the following statement:

We are thrilled to see the resolution to ban a statewide property tax pass the final legislative hurdle with a 2/3 majority. Now, Tennesseans will have the opportunity to vote yes on a constitutional amendment during the 2026 election to forever ban a statewide property tax like we did the income tax a decade ago. A special thanks to the sponsors, past and present, and to our coalition. We’d also like to give a special thanks to our friend Rob Mitchell, the Rutherford County property tax assessor, who rang the alarm years ago that we must amend our state constitution to remove the threat of a statewide property tax and protect future generations of Tennesseans.

“As legislative session draws to a close, we’re proud of the work that AFP, our volunteers, and lawmakers accomplished together to make our statethe great state of Tennesseeone of the best in the nation. Hundreds of volunteers joined us as citizen lobbyists to fight for school choice, empowering parents to make educational decisions for their children. Our work this year focused on leaving a legacy to protect the rights of Tennesseans to enshrine less government, lower taxes, and more freedom – the Volunteer Way.”
