South Carolinians Deserve to See Corporate Welfare Deals

Oct 14, 2020 by AFP

COLUMBIA, SC – Americans for Prosperity-South Carolina (AFP-SC) today commended a state Circuit court’s ruling that the South Carolina Department of Commerce violated the South Carolina Freedom of Information Act. The ruling derives from a lawsuit filed by state Senator Dick Harpootlian that sought to uncover information about economic development deals.

AFP-SC State Director Andrew Yates issued the following statement:

“Protecting taxpayer dollars is more imperative than ever with our state’s finances strained due to COVID-19. Instead of the government picking winners and losers, we should be leveling the playing field so all businesses can succeed.

“We thank state Senator Harpootlian for helping shine a light on how much taxpayer resources are going to politically connected companies. South Carolinians deserve to know how their tax dollars are being spent and we urge lawmakers to put our state on a path to eliminate all corporate welfare and allow taxpayers to see how the state is allocating funds across the board.”
