Voters Reject Tax Increase for Medicaid Expansion

Encouraging sign for legislative session, says grassroots group

BOZEMAN, MT. – Americans for Prosperity-Montana (AFP-MT) released the following statement after the defeat of I-185, a ballot measure that would have made Montana’s Medicaid expansion program permanent and funded it with a tobacco-tax increase:

“AFP-Montana warned that Medicaid expansion would inevitably lead to calls for higher taxes to cover the cost of thousands of able-bodied adults flooding a system designed for our most vulnerable. We were right. Thankfully, Montanans recognized that raising taxes is not a viable fix for a broken Medicaid system,” said AFP-MT State Director David Herbst. “Instead of going back to the same watering hole, we urge the legislature to work towards real health care reforms that lower costs and increase access, like streamlining telemedicine rules.”
