Post-SCOTUS Ruling, Congress Must Act

Jun 18, 2020 by AFP

Arlington, Va. – Today, the Supreme Court rejected the Administration’s latest attempt to undo the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. It held that the administration failed to offer a reasoned explanation for its decision to rescind DACA and thus violated administrative procedure. While the decision ensures that the protections under DACA are not eliminated today it does not permanently preserve the program.

Daniel Garza, President of The LIBRE Initiative, and Tim Philips, President of Americans For Prosperity, released the following statement:

“Today, DACA recipients and the U.S. businesses, institutions, communities, families across the country they are a part of have been afforded temporary relief.

However, as we have always said, it remains the responsibility of Congress to take action – something they have failed to do since 2001 despite overwhelming public support for a solution. It is vital for Congress and the White House to come together on a solution that is permanent and provides the needed certainty.

Our nation has long looked to our elected officials – on both sides – to lead and come together around a permanent solution for Dreamers. For Dreamers and U.S., communities a permanent solution is essential.

Americans know and value the many contributions of Dreamers. Dreamers are our neighbors, students, teachers, healthcare workers, employees, employers, and men and women in our armed services. As our country faces a global pandemic here at home, we are seeing the valuable contributions that the approximately 27,000 Dreamers working as nurses, physicians’ assistants, and other health professions are providing to help battle COVID-19.  One of the many examples of how Dreamers are contributing members of society, which helps explain why a vast majority of Americans support a permanent solution for Dreamers.

With today’s ruling, there is no room for this topic to continue to be poisoned by politics. There is a clear path out of this. The Administration and Congressional lawmakers, without delay, should be working together toward a permanent solution that provides certainty to Dreamers and to the U.S. communities that count on their contributions.”
