Grassroots group praises expanded educational opportunity for NH students

CONCORD, NH – Following Governor Sununu’s announcement to grant $1.5 million into the Education Tax Credit Scholarship Program, Americans for Prosperity-New Hampshire (AFP-NH) on Tuesday praised the decision and urged the legislature to pass legislation that increases educational opportunity. The funding comes from the governor’s discretionary education account from the CARES Act.

AFP-NH Deputy Director of Grassroots Operations Sarah Scott issued the following statement:

“This pandemic has shown our current, one-size fits all education system needs to be more flexible and innovative to meet the education needs of Granite State students and families. This influx of funds to the Education Tax Credit Program will empower our students to seek an educational experience that works for them.

“This is a great step to increase educational freedom, but the legislature should work in the next session to rethink our educational system so one’s educational experience isn’t dictated by your ZIP code or income. Ultimately, we believe that all students should be able to benefit from programs that expands educational opportunity, regardless of income or status.”

Background:

The Education Tax Credit Program was enacted in 2012 and gives tax credits to families and people who donate to non-profits that award these scholarships. Scholarships are given to eligible families for use on private schooling, classes at accredited colleges or universities, tutoring, online learning, and homeschooling expenses.
