Michigan Public Employees Now Able To Fully Exercise First Amendment Rights

LANSING, Mich. – Americans for Prosperity-Michigan (AFP-MI) applauded the decision from the Michigan Civil Service Commission to end the automatic withdrawal of union fees from employees, empowering Michigan workers to decide if they’d like to be part of a union. The ruling makes Michigan the first state to implement rules that align with the Janus Supreme Court decision, which ensures public employees are able to fully exercise their First Amendment rights.

AFP-MI State Director Annie Patnaude issued the following statement:

“This decision is good news for our public employees.  Janus affirmed that every worker deserves to be educated about their union rights, must have the ability to exercise those rights without restriction, and must give their consent to contribute to a union. Today’s decision brings Michigan into alignment with the High Court’s ruling.

“We appreciate the Commission implementing a clear affirmative consent process to ensure that the constitutional rights of Michigan’s current and future public servants are never infringed upon by the government.”
