ICYMI: AFP-SD Hosts Annual Legislative Wrap Up Event

Rapid City, South Dakota—This week, Americans for Prosperity-South Dakota (AFP-SD) hosted its Annual Legislative Wrap Up Event evaluating performance of the South Dakota State Legislature on bills considered during the 2024 legislative session and whether they would advance freedom and opportunity in the Rushmore State.

AFP-SD Regional Vice President Don Haggar gave the session an overall grade of “C,” based on the following criteria:
• Attendance: Black Hills went most of the session without two legislators.
• Civility: While awarding a star for improvement over recent years, name-calling and immature behavior still occurred among legislators.
• Content: No significant legislation was passed to address our state’s biggest concern, education freedom.

After the event, Haggar made the following statement:

“As the state’s premier grassroots organization, AFP-SD is committed to its role of educating South Dakotans on the issues that matter most. We are pleased to have held this event to inform voters about the work done by their elected representatives.

“While our legislators had opportunities to capitalize on policies that would improve the lives of South Dakotans, they failed to pass meaningful measures that would address our state’s largest issues, such as education. Our state falls well behind many others across the country in terms of parental choice in education. AFP-SD recognized this as a main policy concern this legislative session, but unfortunately, any effort to make transformative changes and champion education freedom failed in committee.

“Our democratic republic relies on an engaged and informed citizenry to hold lawmakers accountable and we remain committed to providing South Dakotans with information to better understand what is and isn’t happening on their behalf in Pierre.”
