Grassroots Group Praises Plan to Give Tutoring Dollars to Kids

AFP-MI says giving money directly to families is Michigan’s best shot at academic recovery

Lansing, MICH. – Americans for Prosperity-Michigan praised lawmakers today after panels in both chambers took up bills that would give money to families in an effort to help students recover from the effects of pandemic school closures.

AFP-MI state director Annie Patnaude had this to say:
“The pandemic has taken an enormous toll on education. We applaud Representative Alexander and Senator Bizon for acknowledging that Michigan students are the future leaders of our state, and being realistic about what it’s going to take to get them back on track. Supplementing what teachers are doing in the classroom by getting tutoring dollars to kids will give Michigan the best shot at academic recovery and that means a stronger economy long term.”

Under HB 5859 sponsored by Representative Julie Alexander (R-Hanover) and SB 925 sponsored by Senator John Bizon (R-Battle Creek) families would be able to apply for a grant of up to $1500 per student. The money could be spent on tutoring, summer courses, and certain educational supplies. Students who live at or below the federal poverty line and those who have had more days out of the classroom as a result of Covid would be given funding priority.
