INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Americans for Prosperity-Indiana (AFP-IN) on Thursday expressed support for Senate Bill 399, which would create opportunity for workers in Indiana by curbing the growth of burdensome and unnecessary occupational licensing regulations. AFP-IN has consistently opposed unnecessary occupational licensing without a public need. AFP-IN State Director Justin Stevens today testified before the Senate Commerce and Technology Committee in support of S.B. 399, which passed committee 7-2 and now heads to the full Senate for a vote.
“These onerous and expensive requirements for occupations place unnecessary burdens on workers trying provide for themselves and their families. Ostensibly created to improve quality of service and protect consumers, occupational licensing laws today serve mostly to protect special interests and make it harder for people to succeed,” said AFP-IN State Director Justin Stevens. “We need to eliminate, not erect, barriers to opportunity. We thank Senators Holdman and Koch for working to ease these restrictions and encourage the Senate to swiftly approve S.B. 399 and help everyone in Indiana pursue their version of the American dream.”
S.B. 399, which was introduced by state Senators Travis Holdman and Eric Koch, requires regulators to review any proposed rules and review existing regulation once every seven years in order to ensure that licensing is the most appropriate form of regulation to use in each case. In addition, the bill will offer second chances to formerly incarcerated Hoosiers who have paid their debt to society by making it easier for them to rejoin the workforce in fields unrelated to their convictions.
