Americans for Prosperity Supports Probation Reform as Way to Increase Public Safety
HARRISBURG, PA – Today, Americans for Prosperity-Pennsylvania (AFP-PA) weighed in shortly after SB913 passed in the Senate. The bill, introduced by Sens. Baker, Bartolotta, and Williams, will remove redundancies in the probation system to make the government’s process more efficient. The grassroots group believes such a move will increase public safety because it will reduce recidivism, allowing probation officers and the system to allocate time to more threatening cases.
AFP-PA State Director Ashley Klingensmith issued the following statement:
“This legislation makes several significant strides. It will allow individuals to leave the judicial district during their supervision time, shorten the duration of this period which will reduce the risk of technical violations, and set up a process for review conferences where probation can be ended early should all criteria be met.”
“These individuals are Pennsylvanians that made a mistake and should be provided the opportunity to take full advantage of the second chance they’ve rightfully earned. Together, the gains through SB913’s reforms will expand job prospects and provide them with more time to spend in their communities, with their families – two factors that are proven to reduce recidivism.”
“We urge the House Judiciary Committee to swiftly report this legislation that is soft on taxpayers and smart on crime, ultimately making our communities safer.”
