Grassroots group reaffirms commitment to Porter’s nomination following Judiciary Committee testimony

Harrisburg, Pa. – Americans for Prosperity-Pennsylvania (AFP-PA) reaffirmed its strong support of David Porter to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit following his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.

The grassroots advocacy group first announced its support for Porter in April, running digital ads in support of the Pennsylvanian and urging AFP activists in the Commonwealth to contact their Senators in support of this highly-qualified nominee. While Senator Toomey has been supportive of qualified nominees to the bench, Senator Bob Casey (D) failed to join a bipartisan vote in support of Justice Neil Gorsuch.

Porter previously clerked for the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and serves as an elected member of the American Law Institute.

Americans for Prosperity-Pennsylvania State Director Beth Anne Mumford issued the following statement:

“David Porter has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to upholding the Constitution and Senator Casey’s attempts to obstruct this nominee for political purposes is disturbing. The blue slip was never intended to be used as a partisan tool to keep highly qualified nominees in limbo and Sen. Casey’s abuse of that courtesy would deprive Pennsylvanians the fully functioning judiciary they deserve. Our nation has nearly 180 judicial vacancies across the country and we thank Sen. Toomey for addressing this crisis with the urgency it deserves and giving his consent to advance the nominee. We urge Senator Casey to stop playing political games with the Courts and work with Senator Toomey to get this qualified nominee on the bench forthwith.”

Background:

Earlier this year, Americans for Prosperity announced a scaled-up investment in judicial engagement which includes educating Americans for Prosperity activists on the importance of a fully-functioning judiciary, supporting fair and qualified lower courts nominees, and laying the grassroots groundwork for any upcoming Supreme Court vacancies. Americans for Prosperity has also announced support for Paul Matey of New Jersey for the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and Andrew Oldham of Texas, who was recently nominated for the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in the eleventh wave of nominees. The group also supported Wisconsin’s Michael Brennan for the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, who was confirmed by the Senate in May.
