Americans for Prosperity: Occupational Licensing Reform Ensures “All South Carolinians Have a Fair Shot at Success”

Both House and Senate committees today approved bills prohibiting denial of occupational license based on prior criminal convictions

COLUMBIA, SC — Americans for Prosperity – South Carolina (AFP-SC) today praised the bicameral action on legislation to prohibit the state from denying an occupational license based solely or in part on a prior criminal conviction. One in five jobs requires a license from the government.

The Senate Committee on Labor, Commerce and Industry passed SB 165, led by Senator Wes Climer. The House Committee on Labor, Commerce and Industry passed HB 3605, led by Speaker Murrell Smith. Both chambers will now consider their respective bills.

AFP-SC State Director Candace Carroll released the following statement:

“I am excited to see movement in both chambers on legislation that will give a second chance to those who have successfully left the criminal justice system. At best, occupational licensing is a hurdle for those looking to start over and support themselves, if not an out-right denial. Reforming occupational licensing to ensure all South Carolinians have a fair shot at success is clearly a priority for both chambers. I thank Speaker Smith and Senator Climer for their work on this important matter, and I look forward to working with the House and the Senate to send a consensus bill to Governor McMaster’s desk.”
