Jackson, MS—Following Governor Tate Reeves’ veto of House Bill 569, Americans for Prosperity-Mississippi (AFP-MS) supported his decision as misguided amendments were added by Senator and Public Health Chairman Hob Bryan (SD-07) to the legislation that was created to eliminate Certificate of Need (CON) laws in the state. AFP-MS is now calling on Governor Reeves to make CON repeal a priority item for special session.
AFP-MS State Director, Starla Brown, released the following statement:
“We stand with Governor Reeves’ veto as Representative Creekmore crafted good legislation, HB 922, which was far from the HB 569 bill text that was sent to the Governor’s office. In Mississippi, we are one of 35 states that require health care providers to obtain a CON from a state board before opening or expanding health care facilities, holding back our ability to serve medical needs across the state and giving individuals a personal option.
“By repealing CON, we can expand competition in the health care market and give access to quality care. We are calling on Governor Reeves to make CON a priority item in the legislature’s special session and thank him for the support he has shown towards fully repealing CON thus far.”
Background
For months, AFP-MS has deployed grassroots activists to build support for CON repeal through door knocking, phone calls, and meeting with legislators. AFP-MS has also stood up online resources to educate voters on the importance of ending CON laws in Mississippi. To read an op-ed by Brown on this subject, click here.
