Campaign includes gas station TV and targeted digital advertisements

Baton Rouge, La. – Americans for Prosperity-Louisiana (AFP-LA) launched a robust statewide campaign combining new series of ads this week urging lawmakers to reject the proposed gas tax hike for the kickoff of the legislative session.

The grassroots group supports Rep. Mark Wright’s proposed bill (HB 40) to prevent gas tax dollars from being used for salaries and benefits for state employees working in the Department of Transportation and Development. Instead, these funds will address Louisiana’s infrastructure projects directly.

The chapter hosted an Axe the Tax informational event series a week ahead of the start of the session in cities across the state with key lawmakers to engage and activate grassroots surrounding the gas tax issue. Rep. Mark Wright and Rep. Rick Edmonds attended events in their areas.

AFP-LA State Director James Lee issued the following statement:

“Louisianans can’t afford a gas tax hike—not in a thriving economy and certainly not during today’s challenging economic climate where small businesses and families are still struggling to recover. This blatantly out of touch gas tax hike would add 22 cents to every gallon drivers use to fill up their tanks. Meanwhile, elected officials continue their irresponsible tax and spend policies to pay for their every whim. Rep. Wright’s proposal will ensure the Department of Transportation will formally request their funding through the appropriations process, following all other state departments. Louisiana can build better infrastructure. And, we can certainly do so without shifting the burden to our hardworking taxpayers.”

During the 2021 legislative session, AFP-LA will encourage lawmakers to champion additional policies that promote economic opportunity for all Louisianans. Other key areas are currently at the forefront include expanding access to quality health care and reforming the criminal justice system.
