ATLANTA, GA – Today, following the announcement from the Senate Study Committee on Certificate of Need Reform recommending a full repeal of Georgia’s Certificate of Need (CON) laws, Americans for Prosperity – Georgia (AFP-GA) is applauding the decision and calling on lawmakers to follow the Committee’s recommendations in the upcoming legislative session.

AFP-GA State Director Tony West released the following statement applauding the Committee’s recommendations:

“Today, the Senate Study Committee on Certificate of Need Reform took a bold step in the ongoing effort to fully repeal Georgia’s outdated government permission slips that ultimately limit the supply of health care services. We are grateful for the Committee’s recommendation and remain hopeful the full Georgia General Assembly will follow the recommendations and pass a full repeal.

“AFP-GA thanks our many grassroots activists who have partnered with us in our journey to repeal CON laws in our state. While we are thankful for today’s decision, the fight is not over. We encourage Georgians to contact their elected officials and urge them to support our efforts.”

Background

Throughout this year, AFP-GA has been an influential leader in advocating for a full repeal of Certificate of Need laws. Last December, AFP-GA launched a six-figure ad campaign urging the repeal of CON laws. Since then, AFP-GA has been an active participant in the legislative process and grassroots efforts raising awareness about how CON laws negatively impact communities around Georgia.

In August, AFP-GA hosted a press conference in Augusta after a Georgia House of Representatives Certificate of Need Modernization Study Committee meeting that featured testimony from Katie Chubb, the Executive Director of Augusta Birth Center, who is suing the state of Georgia on the status of CON regulations. Additionally, AFP-GA State Director Tony West published an op-ed in the Albany Herald highlighting Chubb’s story and how CON laws have been detrimental.

In October, Chubb and other medical professionals testified in Savannah at the Senate Study Committee on Certificate of Need Reform to call for a full repeal.
