BATON ROUGE, La – Americans for Prosperity-Louisiana (AFP-LA) today announced its support for HB 524, a bill that would establish a legal market for cannabis in Louisiana. The grassroots group will activate its grassroots activists across the state to advance this bill seeking to improve public safety outcomes by ending criminal penalties for cannabis possession for those 21 and older.
AFP-LA State Director James Lee issued the following statement:
“What Louisiana needs is a new approach to cannabis. Our state’s current laws on the books do more harm than good—putting hundreds of thousands of Louisianans behind bars for offenses that are not a true threat to public safety. This distracts law enforcement from tackling true, public safety concerns that negatively impact our communities. Legalization will not only provide a smart on crime, soft on taxpayers approach to our justice system, but will also ensure a framework that creates a level playing field for entrepreneurs and business owners. Our activists applaud Rep. Richard Nelson for his leadership and willingness to take on this challenging issue. We urge our legislators to support Rep. Nelson’s proposal that will improve public safety in our communities and further the economic recovery.”
