COLUMBIA, SC — Americans for Prosperity – South Carolina (AFP-SC) today applauded the Senate Committee on Labor, Commerce and Industry for approving HB 3605, which would prohibit the state from denying an occupational license based solely or in part on a prior criminal conviction. This is similar to a bill passed by the committee earlier this session. The House has unanimously passed the bill.
AFP-SC State Director Candace Carroll released the following statement:
“One in five jobs requires a permission slip from the government in the form of an occupational license. These burdensome requirements stand in the way of South Carolinians starting a career, most especially those who have left the criminal justice system. By moving forward with the Speaker’s bill, the Senate is moving forward on a consensus bill that has a real shot at becoming law. I am optimistic we will send a bill to Governor McMaster’s desk to give those looking to start over a fair shot at success.”
