AFP-WV Critical of Gov. Jim Justice’s Tax About-Face

CHARLESTON, W.Va.—According to media reports, Governor Jim Justice’s administration announced the implementation of a new tax that will hurt West Virginians’ pocketbooks to the tune of over $50 Million annually, as the state begins to collect sales tax for citizens’ online purchases from out-of-state retailers. This move comes despite no legislative action to implement this policy. In fact, both legislative leaders and the Governor stated earlier this year their opposition to such a tax policy.

“Gov. Justice’s plan to implement a harmful online sales tax represents a shocking about-face. Gov. Justice announced back in June that he didn’t, ‘want to reach into West Virginians’ pockets when we don’t need to ‘by collecting taxes on folks’ online purchases from out-of-state retailers. Now, despite state revenue surpluses, Gov. Justice has simply changed his mind to the detriment of all Mountaineers,” said AFP-WV State Director Jason Huffman. “On behalf of taxpayers across the Mountain State, AFP-WV is calling on legislative leaders who’ve opposed this policy since day one to make this right by West Virginia families who deserve to keep more of their hard earned money, not less.”
