RICHMOND, Va. – Americans for Prosperity-Virginia (AFP-VA) encourage the legislature to reject amendments to SB1406 that distract from the bill’s main objective of ending the harmful impacts of our current response to cannabis use. This bill will end criminal penalties for cannabis possession for those that are 21 and older and allow a legal market to thrive in the Commonwealth.
AFP-VA State Director J.C. Hernandez issued the following statement:
“There is a time and place for legislation to be developed, and that’s in the General Assembly. Citizens of the Commonwealth deserve transparency when it comes to the legislative process. Unfortunately, Gov. Northam is using his position to insert new language that will force workers in a growing industry into a restrictive labor market that strips workers of freedom and choice. This bill can improve public safety outcomes by allowing law enforcement to focus on more serious threats within our communities, but any progress will be hampered if Virginia imposes massive regulatory requirements that undermine the viability of a legal marketplace. We encourage lawmakers to urge the governor to remove these harmful amendments from the bill that stand in the way of its rightful passage.”
